More than just a sport, surfing is a true institution in Rio de Janeiro. One thing is certain: it's one of the best destinations for surfing in Brasil. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, discover our favorite spots for surfing in Rio de Janeiro.

Arpoador

Where to Surf in Rio de Janeiro: Our Favorite Spots

Arpoador is considered the birthplace of surfing in Brasil. Indeed, it was on this beach that surfing was introduced in the 1970s. Even today, this legendary site, sometimes nicknamed "Arpex," remains one of Rio de Janeiro's best surfing spots. Beyond its dreamlike setting with crystal-clear waters and its characteristic rocky point, the spot offers excellent surfing conditions. With a powerful beach-break and beautiful waves, the site is suitable for beginners.

The downside? Due to its popularity, the spot is often crowded. It's best to go early in the morning to secure a spot in the water and avoid the crowds.

The bonus: being lit throughout the night, Arpoador beach offers the opportunity for more daring surfers to try night surfing.

Practical Information:

Spot type: Beach break + Point break
Wave direction: Right and left
Swell direction: East, South-East, South
Wind direction: North-East, East
Swell size: Between 1 m and 5 m
Level: All levels (as with all spots, beginners are strongly advised to be accompanied).

Prainha

Where to Surf in Rio de Janeiro: Our Favorite Spots

Although situated somewhat away from downtown (approximately 30-40 minutes from the center), Prainha beach is renowned as Rio de Janeiro's best surfing spot and one of the most favored by local surfers. The reasons? First, the beach offers a paradise-like setting with a tropical forest as its backdrop.

Second, the spot is known for having the easiest waves to catch in the metropolis: waves continuously form and break. This makes it a playground for experienced surfers but can be challenging for beginners. Finally, being somewhat off the beaten path, it's far less crowded than Arpoador, Ipanema...

Note: Due to its isolated location from downtown, Prainha beach is not patrolled. It's therefore recommended to go surfing in a group.

Practical Information:

Spot type: Beach break
Wave direction: Right and left
Swell direction: South-West, South
Wind direction: North-West
Swell size: Between 0.5 m and 3 m
Level: All levels (as with all spots, beginners are strongly advised to be accompanied).

Barra da Tijuca

Barra da Tijuca beach (simply called Barra by locals) is among Rio de Janeiro's must-visit surfing spots. It hosts several national and international surfing championships, including the iconic Rio Pro.

The spot appeals to both beginner and experienced surfers alike. For beginner surfers, its main advantage lies in the fact that there isn't too much sand bank movement at the bottom. Additionally, its beach breaks are quite consistent. For experienced surfers, head to Postinho, located at the end of Barra beach, where large halfpipes form, perfect for having fun doing tricks.

Note: Stretching 20 km long, Barra da Tijuca beach is Rio de Janeiro's largest beach. It's also one of the cleanest beaches in the city.

Practical Information:

Spot type: Beach break
Wave direction: Right and left
Swell direction: South-East, South-West, South
Wind direction: North
Swell size: Between 0.5 and 2 m
Level: All levels (as with all spots, beginners are strongly advised to be accompanied).
