History

Petrópolis was officially established on March 16, 1843, when the lands were transferred to Peter II. During Brazil's First Republic, from 1894 to 1903, it served as the capital of Rio de Janeiro State. In 1903, an agreement with Bolivia concerning territorial exchange and Brazil's commitment to building the Madeira-Mamoré railway in Rondônia State was concluded.

By 2010, the city had 295,917 inhabitants, representing growth from the previous census count of 286,537.

When to Visit?

This imperial city can be visited year-round thanks to its pleasant environment. However, July marks the beginning of peak tourist season in Petrópolis, with the highly anticipated launch of Bauernfest and the arrival of winter.

Buses from Rio de Janeiro operated by Única Facil will take you to this destination. The journey typically takes between one and two hours, with tickets costing 28.79 R$. Buses depart hourly.
