History

Long before Brazil's colonial period, the Potiguara and Tupi tribes inhabited the Ceará region. They lived peacefully along the coastal side of this part of the country.

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Portuguese colonized the entire region. They built a small village with a fort that served as a defensive post against indigenous attacks.

Around 1654, the city took the name Villa do Forte da Assumpção and became the capital of the Ceará captaincy. The village's significant economic growth in 1823 led authorities to grant it city status. That same year, it became the capital of Ceará province and took the name Fortaleza Nova de Bragança.

The city center offers numerous attractions, each distinguished by its originality. Among them is Centro Dragão do Mar de Arte e Cultura, a cultural center located in Iracema. It includes three museums, the Memorial da Cultura Cearense, the Contemporary Art Museum and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, a library, cinemas, a planetarium, and several restaurants.

After a day at the beach, it's always pleasant to stop and sit on one of the benches at Praça do Ferreira, the city's most popular square.

For those who love nature, Fortaleza's city center doesn't lack green spaces. Among them are Praça José de Alencar and Parque Ecologico do Cocó, near the Iguatemi shopping center.

Exploring the outskirts of Fortaleza reveals other wonders such as Praia do Futuro, ten kilometers from the city center. Stretching five kilometers, it's the ideal place to admire the sea while savoring delicious seafood dishes at one of the beach huts.

Away from the large ocean waves, children can enjoy themselves in the pools at Praia de Porto das Dunas, in the municipality of Aquiraz.

The most economical way to reach Fortaleza's most attractive sites is by bus.

Circular Line 1 allows travel from downtown to Desembargador Moreira via Mercado Central, Dragão do Mar, Historiador Raimundo Girão, and Abolicão. The Circular 2 axis makes the reverse trip.

Great Circular 1 is open 24/7. It connects downtown to Dragão do Mar, Historiador Raimundo Girão, Abolição, Praia do Futuro, Terminal Papicu, and the Iguatemi shopping center. Great Circular 2 allows you to return.

Traveling by one of the Centro Iguatemi buses costs just three Brazilian Reals. Departure is from downtown. The bus then goes to Monsenhor Tabosa, Abolição, Desembargador Moreira, stopping at the Iguatemi shopping center.

Line 917 Aeroporto Beira Mar departs from the airport to reach Beira Mar via Tabosa Street.

By Taxi

Fortaleza taxis can go almost anywhere in the city. Rates are approximately two to three Brazilian Reals per kilometer. Trips to destinations outside the metropolis can reach up to 150 Brazilian Reals.
