The Sucuri offers one of Brazil's most iconic floating experiences. The near-total transparency of its waters results from a high concentration of calcium carbonate and calcified snail shells that line its bed. The outcome: exceptional visibility that turns the descent into a direct observation of fish and aquatic vegetation, without sophisticated equipment.
The site also lends itself to complementary activities on the fazenda's trails, on foot, by bike or on horseback, in an environment where local wildlife regularly reveals itself.
The origin of the name: an aerial christening in 1975
The name "Sucuri" comes from the Tupi-Guarani language and means "anaconda". Contrary to what one might believe, it was not the presence of these snakes that gave rise to the name, but rather the sinuous shape of the river course, which resembles an anaconda in motion.
This resemblance was only noticed in 1975, when pilots on an expedition flew over the area and named the river from the sky. The name stuck, and the fazenda bordering the site is today known as Fazenda do Rio Sucuri.
What to see and do
The 1.5 km float
The flagship activity consists of drifting down the river for about 1.5 km, equipped with a mask, snorkel and wetsuit provided by the local operator. The current is gentle and the effort minimal: free diving takes place at the water's surface, with the flow.
Below the surface, you'll observe matogrosso, corimba, dorade, pacu, piraputanga and pintado, among other species. The aquatic vegetation, perfectly illuminated by light passing through the water, completes the picture.
Trails and surrounding wildlife
Before or after floating, the riverbanks can be explored on foot, by bike or horseback. The surrounding forest is home to snakes, caimans, monkeys, sloths, macaws and kingfishers. Sightings depend on the time of day and season, but local guides know where to direct your attention.

Fazenda São Geraldo is located about 20 km southwest of Bonito's centre. The most common route from abroad involves a flight to Campo Grande, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, situated roughly 3.5 hours' drive from Bonito.
