The Amazon rainforest and its wildlife have always captivated you, and you've decided to take the plunge with a trip to the Amazon in Brazil? That's wonderful news! From vaccinations to health precautions to what to pack… Discover all our tips to properly prepare your Amazon trip.

Vaccinations to Consider for an Amazon Stay

Planning a stay in the Amazon rainforest during your trip to Brazil? While no vaccines are mandatory to enter Brazilian territory, some are highly recommended! This is particularly true of the yellow fever vaccine. Valid for 10 years, it's advisable to get it several weeks before your arrival.

That's why we recommend scheduling an appointment with your doctor at least 6 weeks before departure. You can verify that your routine vaccinations are up to date and get those that may be useful (such as hepatitis A and B) during your trip to Brazil. It's also a good opportunity to discuss malaria risks you might face depending on the regions you visit and plan for a potential antimalarial treatment.

Health Precautions to Know

Beyond vaccinations, travelers heading to the Amazon in Brazil should take all necessary health precautions. Since water and food can contain viruses, parasites, and bacteria, it's advisable to avoid tap water and ice. Opt instead for bottled water, boiled water, or water purified by microbial filters or chemical disinfection. When it comes to food, avoid raw and undercooked items.

No matter what, and even though it's not mandatory, you should seriously consider getting comprehensive travel insurance for your Amazon stay. This can save you in many situations, even the most challenging ones. For example, a medical consultation and medication purchases can be very expensive. It would be a shame not to be able to get reimbursed, wouldn't it?

Opt for travel insurance with assistance and repatriation for your trip to Brazil!

Note: speaking of medications, be aware that there are many counterfeit drugs in Brazil. Never buy fake medications at the risk of worsening your situation!

What to Pack in Your Suitcase

Most travelers heading to the Amazon in Brazil tend to believe they need to gear up from head to toe to face the hostile conditions of the wild. Unless you're on a survival expedition, there's no need to pack all the adventure gear. Pack only the essentials to avoid burdening yourself and being overloaded.

To help you prepare your bag, here's a quick checklist of items to bring for an Amazon stay.

The Essentials:

  • Good hiking shoes, especially if you're planning treks in the Amazon rainforest. Depending on the season, you may be provided with boots once you arrive.

  • Long, lightweight clothing: canvas pants, high socks, long-sleeved t-shirts… Avoid tight-fitting clothes that won't stop mosquitoes!

  • Sun protection: hat or cap, sunscreen, sunglasses…

  • A rain jacket,

  • A small hiking backpack,

  • And especially mosquito repellent!

The Bonuses:

  • A flashlight if you're spending the night deep in the jungle,

  • A pair of binoculars to observe wildlife during your expedition,

  • A swimsuit,

  • Books (or e-reader) and other personal items to unwind!
